Janmashtami 2025: How to Keep Yourself Hydrated While Fasting

Janmashtami 2025 – Shri Krishna Janmashtami marks the birth of the supreme god– Shri Krishna. It is a special day on its own and even special for those who are true devotees of Lord Krishna and rigorously follow his path or teachings. Not just in India, the birthday of Krishna or fondly called Kanha, Madhav, or Laddu Gopal is celebrated across many countries with equal zeal and enthusiasm.

It is the time for celebrating, feasting, and fasting. The devotees all over the world observe fast which is considered extremely auspicious. For 24 Hrs. long fast, they refrain from consuming grains and break it at midnight after offering their prayers. I could easily recall the performances of “Ras Lilla” and decorative Jhakis I used to go and watch along with my family as a child. There are also entertainment & competitive events like Dahi Handi immensely popular in Maharashtra. There are so many things which make this beautiful day a lot more amazing and interesting.

As this pious occasion is about to knock the door, we decided to come up with a handful of tips that will be beneficial for your health as you observe fasting, and staying hydrated is one such crucial thing to stay energised and avoid the feeling of laziness throughout the day. Know why?

When is Janmashtami in 2025?

In 2025, Janmashtami, the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, will be observed over two days, 15th and 16th August, due to the timing of the Ashtami tithi. The auspicious lunar phase begins at 11:49 PM on 15th August and ends at 9:34 PM on 16th August, with the midnight puja (Nishita Puja), symbolising Krishna’s divine birth, taking place in the early hours of 16th August. While some devotees will commence rituals on the evening of 15th August, most traditions mark the main festivities, fasting, and temple celebrations on 16th August, making it the primary day of observance for Janmashtami in 2025.

Why is janmashtami celebrated?

Janmashtami is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu, who is one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. According to Hindu scriptures, Krishna was born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura during the month of Bhadrapada (August–September) on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha.

The festival holds deep spiritual significance because Lord Krishna’s birth is believed to symbolise the victory of good over evil and the restoration of dharma (righteousness). His arrival took place at a time when the world was in turmoil, under the tyrannical rule of King Kansa, his maternal uncle. Krishna’s life, teachings, and divine plays (leelas) — from his childhood miracles to his role in the Mahabharata — continue to inspire values of love, compassion, wisdom, and devotion.

Janmashtami is observed with fasting, devotional singing, storytelling of Krishna’s life, enactments of his childhood (Rasa Lila and Dahi Handi), and midnight puja, which marks the exact moment of his birth. It’s a celebration of not just a divine birth, but the timeless message of joy, faith, and righteousness that Krishna represents.
